Today, Sawmill Park is a popular destination for hiking, camping, fishing, and other outdoor activities. The park is home to several trails that wind through the mountains, including the Alpine Loop Backcountry Byway, which offers a scenic drive through the park and surrounding areas.

In addition to its natural beauty, Sawmill Park is also known for its rich history. The area was once home to Native American tribes, and later became a hub of mining activity during the Colorado Gold Rush of the late 1800s. Today, visitors can still see the remnants of old mining structures and ghost towns scattered throughout the park.

Hill Seventyone is a peak located in Hinsdale County, Colorado, in the southwestern part of the state and has an elevation of 12,067.

From the summit of Hill Seventyone, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding San Juan Mountains, including Handies Peak and Uncompahgre Peak. The area around the mountain is also home to a variety of wildlife, including bighorn sheep, elk, and mule deer.

Checkpoint 1: Sawmill Park

Sawmill Park is a picturesque alpine meadow located in Hinsdale County, Colorado, in the San Juan Mountains. The park is situated at an elevation of approximately 11,600 feet (3,535 meters) and is surrounded by towering peaks, including Uncompahgre Peak and Wetterhorn Peak.

The park itself is a popular destination for hikers, campers, and nature enthusiasts. The meadow is surrounded by dense forests of spruce and fir trees and is home to a variety of wildlife, including elk, deer, bighorn sheep, and black bears. In the summer months, the park is covered in wildflowers, including columbines, lupines, and paintbrushes.

This checkpoint serves as a point to visually ensure all tour-goers take a left turn.

Checkpoint 3: Hill Seventyone

From the summit of Hill Seventyone, spectators are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the San Juan Mountains and the surrounding valleys. The peak is particularly popular in the fall when the aspen trees turn brilliant shades of yellow and orange.
